Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing classes for adults and kids in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Real self-defense. Real fitness. No experience required.
About the Academy
Fort Greene BJJ is a new martial arts academy at 412 Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing — practical self-defense skills that build real fitness, mental toughness, and quiet confidence. Beginners start alongside experienced practitioners. Everyone progresses at their own pace.
Jiu-jitsu is a practice. It's problem-solving through movement — the chess match between technique and instinct. You'll learn how to control a situation using leverage and positioning, not size or strength. That's what makes it effective self-defense for anyone, regardless of build or athletic background.
Jiu-jitsu has been taught at this address since 2009. We're proud to keep the art alive here — new ownership, new energy, same commitment to the craft.

Programs
The most effective ground-based self-defense system in the world. Learn to control and submit opponents using leverage and technique — not size or strength. Gi and No Gi classes for all levels, from your very first day to competition prep.
Structured martial arts training for ages 6–12 that builds confidence, discipline, and the ability to stand up for themselves. Not a daycare with punching bags — a real program with real progression. Kids earn their growth here.
Muay Thai–style striking for fitness, stress relief, and practical self-defense. The best full-body workout you'll ever do — and you'll learn how to throw a real kick while you're at it. No experience necessary.
For Parents
Most parents find us because something isn't clicking. Their child is shy, unfocused, getting bullied, or simply not thriving in team sports where they sit on the bench half the time. Martial arts is often the thing they try next — and it works, because every child gets individual attention and measurable progress.
Our kids program (ages 6–12) teaches jiu-jitsu through structure, respect, and real technique. Your child will learn how to defend themselves without throwing punches. They'll build focus, physical confidence, and the habit of showing up and doing hard things.
Adults and kids train in separate, age-appropriate classes. Teenagers may be eligible for both programs depending on age and experience.
The $20 intro works for kids too. Buy one for your child, let them try three classes, and see how they respond. Their reaction will tell you everything you need to know.
Jiu-jitsu teaches kids to control a situation without striking. They learn to de-escalate, defend themselves, and carry confidence that prevents most confrontations before they start.
Every class has structure: warm-up, technique, drilling, review. Kids learn to listen, follow instruction, and stick with something difficult. That carries over to school and home.
No bench. No tryouts. No positions to compete for. Every child trains, every class. Progress is individual and visible — they earn their own advancement.
Training partners are taught to work with each other, not against each other. Classes are supervised, age-grouped, and built so every child feels challenged but never unsafe.
Your First Day
You will be. And nobody will care. Every single person on that mat was the worst one in the room on their first day. Most of our students started with zero martial arts experience. Beginners train alongside experienced practitioners in every class — you'll never be thrown into something you're not ready for.
Jiu-jitsu gets you in shape — that's part of the practice, not a prerequisite. Come as you are. You'll be surprised how quickly your body adapts when the training is engaging enough that you forget you're working out.
Training partners are taught to work with each other, not against each other. This isn't a fight gym. It's a cooperative learning environment where technique is prioritized over aggression. We go at your pace.
A loaner gi is included with your intro — you don't need to buy anything. For No Gi classes, wear athletic shorts (no zippers) and a fitted shirt. Show up 10 minutes early. We'll introduce you, walk you through everything, and pair you with a training partner who knows how to work with beginners.
Then you spent $20 and tried something new. No contract. No cancellation process. No guilt. But most people who make it through the first three classes don't quit — because the challenge itself becomes the reward.
Our training culture is cooperative and technique-driven — not ego-driven. We actively maintain an environment where everyone trains with respect, regardless of gender, size, or experience.
